AED Machines in Gothenburg: a life saving network

In the critical moments following cardiac arrest, an automated external defibrillator (AED) can mean the difference between life and death. Recognizing this, the community of Gothenburg has strategically placed several AEDs throughout the area, providing vital support until emergency medical technicians (EMTs) arrive.

In 2005, Gothenburg Health secured a grant from the state of Nebraska for rural communities, enabling the purchase of 15 to 20 AED machines, according to Alisa Crown, Director of Population Health Programs. Since then, the hospital has diligently maintained these machines, ensuring they remain operational by replacing pads, checking batteries, and relocating them as needed.

Crown also highlighted that various local businesses have independently purchased AEDs. Gothenburg Health extends its maintenance services to these privately acquired devices, reinforcing the community’s safety network.

The American Red Cross describes an AED as a sophisticated, yet user-friendly, medical device. It can analyze the heart's rhythm and deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help re-establish an effective heartbeat. The device comes with clear instructions, making it accessible for anyone to use in an emergency. Awareness and knowledge of AEDs are crucial, as they can significantly impact the chances of saving a life.

In addition to each police officer cruiser, AEDs are prominently displayed at the following locations in Gothenburg:

  • Fresh Seasons

  • Gothenburg Public School

  • Police Department

  • City Shop

  • Parker-Hannifin

  • Wild Horse Golf Course

  • Hilltop Estates

  • YMCA

  • Senior Life Solutions

  • Gothenburg Health Clinic

  • Outdoor Swimming Pool

  • Senior Center

  • NSG

  • Bayer

  • One Global School

  • Banner Church

  • First Methodist Church

  • Flatwater Bank

  • Sun Theatre

Knowing the locations of these lifesaving devices is essential for all community members. In an emergency, quick access to an AED can make a crucial difference.
