Larry C. Gill was recently honored by the installation of a memorial plaque commemorating his service to Gothenburg Health. Larry served on the board of directors from 2006 until his unexpected passing in 2016.
Larry was a visionary leader on Gothenburg Health’s board, driving several initiatives that brought the hospital into the progressive place it is today. Larry also took a lead role in initiating the YMCA project which originated from Gothenburg Health’s board. Larry was passionate about serving his community and in particular, providing opportunities for all segments of the community. While Larry never saw the YMCA project fully come to fruition, he set into motion a contagious effort that resulted in the successful YMCA we value so greatly in our community today.
Mick Brant, Gothenburg Health CEO, who worked under Larry’s guidance for almost four years, remarked, “Larry was a servant leader with the community’s best interest at the heart of all decisions he made. I’ll never forget our January 2015 board meeting when we were forced to make a decision about moving forward with the proposed YMCA project even though we didn’t know where the money would come from. Our philanthropy consultants shared a presentation about the overwhelmingly positive impact the YMCA could have by improving the health and wellbeing of our community’s children. We were all emotionally moved, but Larry was the first to stand up and state that we didn’t have any other choice than to move forward with the project. Larry took the lead in convincing the board to commit to the extremely daunting journey of pursuing the $5 million YMCA addition.”
Larry was deeply invested in his community. In addition to his role on the hospital board, he also had served on the board of the Thirty Mile Canal and Six Mile Ditch, the local Board of Education, and on the Board of Directors of the Gothenburg State Bank. He was a dedicated member of the First Presbyterian Church in Gothenburg and served as an Elder, Treasurer, and member of the choir.
All who worked with Larry appreciated his fierce dedication and steadfastness, and all who knew him valued his kindness, generosity, humor, and genuine interest in those around him. He devoted his life to his faith, family, friends, and community, and his proudest roles were as husband, father, and grandfather.
“It was a simple decision to dedicate our new board room in Larry’s honor. His commitment to our organization and community was something we wanted to remember for generations to come,” said Brant. The Gill family came together and designed the memorial plaque in a special way that would celebrate Larry’s memory. The simple and timeless plaque is mounted on the exterior wall of the boardroom and is easily seen when coming to and from the YMCA. All are welcome and encouraged to view this special tribute to a dynamic Gothenburg leader.
