Gothenburg Health Partners with Gothenburg High School for New Internship Program

Gothenburg Health and Gothenburg High School has teamed up to offer a new internship program for senior students enrolled in the Diversified Occupation program. Launching this school year, the program provided students with hands-on experience across various healthcare and healthcare-related fields.

The program began in the fall with five senior students: Claire Vincent, Alec Winney, Taryn O’Hare, Kalli Strausser, and Christian Massin. A sixth student, Molly Therrien, joined at the beginning of the second semester.

The initiative aims to inspire and educate the next generation of healthcare professionals by giving them a firsthand look at the diverse career opportunities within the industry. Students rotate through all departments at Gothenburg Health, gaining an understanding of the collaborative efforts necessary for hospital operations. After their initial rotations, students can choose specific areas to explore further.

“This has been an exciting new venture for Gothenburg Health, and we are committed to making it a success,” Krystle Sandman, Chief Human Resource Officer at Gothenburg Health, said. “By collaborating with Gothenburg High School, we hope to create a meaningful and enriching experience for students while also fostering a deeper connection between our institution and the community."

Sandman shares her passion for helping to mentor and educate students interested in working in or adjacent to the medical field. “This intern program is something I’m proud to have implemented because it showcases our commitment to community engagement and workforce development. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to gain valuable insights into our industry and showcase the work we do at Gothenburg Health.”

Interested students undergo a thorough application and interview process. Successful candidates are hired as part-time employees and participate in hospital orientation. As employees, they can engage in hands-on duties as appropriate.

Intern Alec Winney highlighted the mentorship he has received while working with healthcare professionals, saying, “Jordan Sieh on acute and Johnna Richter in pharmacy have been great to work with. Dr. Beecham is super knowledgeable, and I enjoy conversations with her.”

Intern Claire Vincent praised her experience shadowing Danita Paul in the Lab. “She does a really good job of including me and explaining things to me,” she said.

While most interns have followed a medical track, the program is not only for those interested in healthcare careers. The hospital employs many professionals that support healthcare.
